Looking back over the past few years, it’s hard to think of another period where leaders have been forced to adapt so quickly. Some changes we chose. Others arrived without warning and demanded an immediate response. That’s the reality of modern leadership.

  • “Efficiency, restructuring or cost programs will always meet resistance.”
    Only when people don’t understand the rationale, the plan, or the implications.
  • “Engagement means pushing out more communication.”
    Engagement is not communication volume; it’s emotional commitment.
  • “There isn’t a better way — this is just how change works.”
    This belief keeps organisations stuck in a cycle where 70% of major initiatives still underperform, just as McKinsey and others have been reporting for decades.

The consequences of these misconceptions are real. Large programmes overrun. Critical capabilities arrive late. IT transformations stall. In fact, around 17% of major tech initiatives go so far off track they threaten the organisation’s viability.

None of this happens because leaders don’t care. It happens because organisations keep applying the same thinking and hope for different results.
